Local Shop Love: Crafty Supplies in the East Bay

6.18.2017

I've recently discovered two shops in the East Bay that set my craft-loving heart aflutter: Long Weekend and Twig & Fig. Whether you actually need new watercolor paints and leather embossing tools, or you're just browsing because you love looking at all the pretty things, these spots will have what you're after.

Long Weekend

Oakland, CA

As of now, the shop is only open on weekends (hence the name), and carries a well-curated selection of art supplies, home goods, and decorative items. The book on Wabi-Sabi is one I've wanted to pick up for a while. I'm excited to read it since I relate to the philosophy strongly in my jewelry design. I'm a fan of the little gallery in the back where they show rotating selections of local artists' work. The way they stage the pieces with a story written directly onto the wall feels like the full gallery treatment.

Twig & Fig

Berkeley, CA

Tucked into a side street in a building with a few other shops, Twig & Fig can be a little bit of a treasure hunt to locate, but X marks the spot for anyone needing some crafty supplies. I picked up some antique stamps, a hand-carved bunny stamp from Japan, and a pretty gold clip...because why not. With all the product photos I'm taking these days, I love to look for lovely items I can use when staging jewelry pics.

Urban Ore

Berkeley, CA

And a bonus: Urban Ore, one of my favorite spots to browse for hidden treasures. The largest area of this warehouse is for home materials, like doors, furniture, bathroom fixtures, and tools, but a smaller area near the front has cool vintage and antique finds. While a lot of the stuff in here might be past its prime, I think anyone looking for a good deal on unique items for a home renovation would have a field day. I snagged a marble tile a couple weeks ago for a few bucks. Anyone working on their home would have no use for one tile, but since all I need it for is a photo backdrop I couldn't be happier.

There are so many awesome small boutiques around. There's no excuse not to shop local!
