New Things: Spring Necklaces & Incense Holders

3.21.2017

After weeks of anticipation waiting for the kiln at my studio to get full enough to be fired, I finally got some of my latest work back. Today I added 14 new ceramic necklaces and seven carved ceramic faceted incense holders to the Moonwalker Things shop

All these beauties are available at moonwalkerthings.etsy.com now, except for the bottom one which is already sold.

While I feel pretty good about having many of these pieces turn out well post-firing, there were plenty of learning moments for me too. That's the thing with ceramics - especially glazing - you never really know how something will turn out. For me, that's part of why I like it. It's a lesson in patience and a reminder that it's a good thing to be 31 and still learning new things. I hope I can say the same thing when I'm 90 too.

In this batch I played with mixing clays, specifically soldate (a darker, more textured clay) and b-mix (smoother and lighter, but not all the way to porcelain white). I was expecting the marbled blending to add a cool effect, but many of the dud pieces turned out too warped to use and with an almost indiscernible pattern. That said, a few did turn out well and I noted in the item description which pieces used mixed clay as part of my little experiment.

For my first foray beyond jewelry I've added incense holders too. I struggled with making the first one and realized it was much easier to carve sharp facets after letting my clay dry for a few days. Live and learn.

I've been using the light minty green one at home for burning incense and it looks so cute hanging out on my coffee table even when not in use. I feel many more of these happening in my future studio time...

Until my next update, follow @MoonwalkerThings on Instagram for behind-the-scenes pics of in-progress things and a peek at what's to come...provided it makes it through the firing and glazing process in one piece ;)
